Argentine Jorge Bergoglio has been elected pope, the first ever from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium. He chose the name Pope Francis.
White rose from the smokestack of the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday afternoon, signaling that the cardinals gathered to choose a new pope had reached an agreement on a new leader for the Roman Catholic Church in just five rounds of voting.
The fast decision likely signals that much of the consensus among the 115 cardinals who gathered just yesterday into the Chapel for voting was reached in the pre-conclave discussions that have taken place in the two weeks since the new pope's predecessor Benedict XVI stepped down from his post on February 28.
The elected cardinal is first asked whether he accepts the position as supreme pontiff and by what name he wishes to be called. He then proceeds to the so-called "Room of Tears" to be dressed in the traditional papal vestments—already there in the room—before appearing from the central window above St. Peter's Basilica. Before he appears, one of the cardinals will come out and announce "Habemus Papam," or "We Have a Pope."
Within minutes of the smoke puffs, St. Peter's Square was packed with rejoicing crowds, chanting "Viva il Papa," or "Long Live the pope" and waving flags of different nationalities.
"I'm very excited. I've been waiting four hours for this moment," said Lucia Carbona, 45, teacher from Florence.
