Video : South African police caught on camera dragging handcuffed man behind van

Further evidence of police brutality in South Africa has emerged in an amateur video that shows a taxi driver, later found dead in custody, being dragged through the streets of Daveyton whilst handcuffed to a police van.

South Africa's police watchdog is investigating the death in custody of a Mozambican taxi driver who was filmed being dragged behind a police vehicle in Daveyton, east of Johannesburg, a spokesman said on Thursday.

Video footage taken by a bystander and published by the South Africa Daily Sun shows 27-year-old Mido Macia handcuffed to the back of a police van and dragged through the streets, in front of a large crowd of bystanders.

At least half a dozen uniformed and police officers clad in stab vests - with at least one brandishing an unholstered pistol - can be seen circling the scene.

Telegraph Southern African Correspondent Aislinn Laing reported that the Daily Sun had two separate videos of the incident and expected to publish a third shortly.

She added: "What is really worrying is ... it appears it is not just a case of one bad apple but actually of complicity among a group of officers."
