"Wednesday" (Bible Study) Random Post Salt-N-Pepa

Y'all know that I am a salt n pepa fan. So her is a recap of Monday show. When Pep crashes at Salt’s house, she brings…
…numerous boxes…
…a naughty portrait…
…and her own symbolism. See, with Pep, you never know what you’re going to get: every encounter is a crap shoot.
So far, Salt-N-Pepa’s road to reconciliation has been relatively smooth. I mean, they’re not moving in together or anything…
…oh wait, yes they are. Pep’s house is getting renovated and a new place that she’s buying in the city isn’t quite ready yet. Pep drops the bombshell while Salt and Gavin are shopping for…
…melons? Weird. Anyway, there’s more melons to be ogled, but first, Pep has to move in:
Pep’s staying for only three days, supposedly, but it looks like she’s packed everything she owns. Before you can say, “Make yourself at home…”
…she already has. What better way to announce your appreciation for being allowed to stay in a place than to strew your ladythings about? Really: Pep is the gift that keeps on giving.
And giving and giving.
At first, it’s unclear why Pep would need to bring a giant painting to a house that she’s staying at for only three nights. And then we see it…
…and realize that this portrait of a topless Pep is clearly for our entertainment. She needed to bring it, yes indeed, if, for nothing else: our benefit. Told you there’d be more melons!
The boobs distress Salt.
“It’s actually a very pretty picture, but…” she sighs. Even if you find her prudishness to be unnecessary, you gotta give it up for the fact that Salt isn’t one to sit on the steps and complain.
She actually does stuff about the things that bother her.
Take for example when Gavin, his boys and Pep decide to play a rowdy game of Dominoes.
Salt takes no shorts when it comes to calling out their loudness.
“Tell Sandy to calm down. I hear her big mouth the most,” she tells Gavin. Ha!
When Sandy and the boys don’t calm down and launch into a rowdier game of Cee-lo, Salt confronts the problem head-on:
“Y’all really buggin’,” she says. You know, if you’re gonna get scolded, that’s the way to get scolded. I wish my mom yelled at me like that.
It does little, by the way, to deter Pep from her rampant gambling:
Because really, if you’re going to stay over someone’s house, why not try to make a little money while you’re at it. That way, you’re living rent-free and making bank.
The next day brings a mess from Pep…
…and a singing lesson for her daughter, Egypt:
Pep’s out so Salt must facilitate this. The best thing about it is that when Egypt comes bounding down the stairs, Salt’s response is, “That’s an interesting outfit.” And so it is.
Oh, and more of Pep’s stuff comes. And by “stuff,” I mean “plant life.”
Love that Salt’s fretting amongst the flora. It’s like she’s in her natural habitat and she’s pissed.
Pep’s in a fruitless meeting with the interior designer of her new apartment all day, while Salt tries desperately to get in touch with her. Toward the end of the day, Salt discovers that the reason she couldn’t connect with Pep is that Pep’s cell phone has been left at the house.
To be fair, it’s probably safer there than under Pep’s tutelage. You never know where that phone might end up!
Pep eventually comes home and, of course, sets off the alarm…
It’s sort of shocking that she didn’t step on Salt’s dog when she was at it. Anyway, it’s obvious that she’s sort of terrorizing the house with her very presence. She talks to Salt the next day during a solo yoga session…
She pledges to clean up her act and says that she even might stop by Salt’s prayer circle today. Salt’s all, “No really, don’t put yourself out,” gently attempting to dissuade Pep, but Pep will have none of it. The only thing that’s missing from this episode is Salt shaking her fist like Mr. Spacely and yelling, “Pe-paaaaaaaa!”
Since there are ladies of God coming over, Pep attempts to do the right thing by turning around the portrait of her nude bosom.
The problem? She turns it around in front of a window.
As one of the prayer ladies arrives, you can hear her saying, “Is that a nipple?” It just wouldn’t be Christian to dignify that with an answer.
The meeting starts. Salt leads it, of course. She draws on personal experience for their discussion topics, which means that today’s prayer meeting is a thinly veiled therapy session on dealing with Pep.
Pep catches wind of Salt’s topics (listening, honesty), because really, she’s not dumb.
She totally interjects, defending her listening skills and deeming Salt “too honest.”
Salt protests the way Pep’s taking everything that she says personally — Salt says that this isn’t about her. She’s right: it’s about her and Pepa. Eventually, Pep joins in the circle and they all have a nice chat about admitting that you’re wrong. I’m not sure how this will make Pep a better house guest, but at least maybe she won’t be so indignant in the future. The prayer circle ends with an impromptu rendition of Salt-N-Pepa’s classic “Expression.”
That’s the kind of prayer circle I want to be a part of. Can I come next time, guys?

"Wednesday" (Bible Study) Question? Have The New Black Church Hurt Our Youth of Today With The God Want You Rich Theology?

Few would argue that hip-hop's is at least partially rooted in the belief that financial prosperity is the ultimate measure of success. Given this market-driven logic, it is no wonder that hip-hop narratives abound with rags to riches stories that celebrate the individual over the collective and the material over the spiritual.

Artists such as Notorious B.I.G., who once rapped that "God meant me to drive a Bentley," argue that their enormous wealth is a divine reward, or what Jay-Z has termed "pro-jetic justice" for their impoverished pasts. And where would they get such convoluted values? A look at the New Black Church, whose good news has been reduced to "God wants you to be rich," provides a good answer.

Through their curious readings of Bible scriptures, depictions of Jesus as wealthy and belief that people are poor because they "ain't living right," the New Black Church reinforces the tired conservative argument that the problems of the disadvantaged are self-inflicted.

While gospels of prosperity have always been commonplace within the black religious tradition -- leaders from Sweet Daddy Grace to Elijah Muhammad have, to varying degrees, promised wealth as a consequence of religious devotion -- "name it and claim it" mantras have moved from the margins to the center of the New Black Church community.

Word-faith pastors no longer preach the virtues of struggle, sacrifice, or redemptive suffering, instead exhorting the poor to "get right" with God by accumulating capital for themselves. As word-faith preacher Creflo Dollar explains on his website, "When you find out how to live your life according to the word of God you will become a money magnet."

Of course, becoming a money magnet requires the congregation to share their bounty with the church. Dollar tells his congregation, "God is not coming back to a church in debt. [T]hat would be against his word" ("Changing Your World," 27 March, 2000). In other words, salvation comes with a price.

To ensure that the people pay it, many New Black Church pastors are beginning to ask their members to bring in tax returns to guarantee appropriate tithing. Others request that members submit their entire checks and allow the church to manage their finances in order to certify that they are appropriately sharing God's grace with their spiritual shepherds.

The connection between New Black Church theology and hip-hop's materialism became no more apparent than when rapper Mase staged his 2004 comeback. As one of the pioneers of the shiny suit era, Mase was the poster child for hip-hop's bling-bling agenda. Disillusioned with the immoral underside of the music industry after becoming born-again, Mase retired from music to devote his entire life to the ministry that he built and modeled after his mentor and pastor, Creflo Dollar.

After being called back to the game (by God or his accountant, depending on who you ask), Mase dropped the disappointing Welcome Back LP. While the album was devoid of profanity, violence and sex, it remained chock full of pro forma references to his wealth of money, cars, homes, and jewelry. Although it was a commercial flop, the album was celebrated by the gospel community for its "positive message," which can be summed up by the final line to his verse on Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" remix: "I'm healed, I'm delivered, I'm rich. And it's all because of Him." What do you think, have the New Black Church hurt our Youth of today?

For every 1,000 crimes America now locks up five times as many people as it did in 1975."
The bad news is that many are inclined to blame the black poor themselves, directing attention away from the corporations who profit from the growth of the prison state, the politicians who built careers selling it to us, and the edifice of white American culture which fundamentally defines itself as the opposite in every way of its poor, unworthy, and now dangerous Black citizens.

It’s high time mass incarceration of the young Black poor is put on the Black Church front burner and kept there till something changes. That's what Jena was about. It’s time for a new mass movement in our Black Churches that will expose the complicit silence of Black leadership on mass Black imprisonment, one that will begin to make continuation of these unjust public policies impossible.

Celebrate it that is! It’s a good bet retailers won’t entertain high expectations of getting $$$.$$ per household from the Christian market. Many Christians refuse to participate in Halloween. Some are wary of its pagan origins; others of its dark, ghoulish imagery; still others are concerned for the safety of their children. But other Christians choose to partake of the festivities, whether participating in school activities, neighborhood trick-or-treating, or a Halloween alternative at their church. I heard this morning on NBC that Holloween is running neck and neck with Christmas as far as spending, I was like what no way that we christians have sit back and partake in this that it is as celebrate as Christmas.

The question is, How should Christians respond to Halloween? Is it irresponsible for parents to let their children trick-or-treat? What about Christians who refuse any kind of celebration during the season — are they overreacting? We over here at the Old Black Church don't observe that holiday. We won't have no porch lights on, no ghost coming out of trees, no blood running, no grave yards. We Honor only the Living The One Who can send your soul to hell or heaven.

I know what you are thinking what! churches don't do Sunday School. It don't seem to be as important as it once were. I am from a small town in Lower Alabama and we don't do Sunday School. Maybe because my church is a Teaching Church. I think that Sunday School is still important for the development of the Christian that want to be informed. Welcome back to the house that hip-hop built, held together by the faith of the one and only Rev Run. Yup, season 4 of Run's House is here, and the Simmons family will once again open their home to MTV's cameras.
This season, the whole family -- Run, Justine, Vanessa, Angela, JoJo, Diggy and Russy -- is back under one roof, and what they experience together will change their lives forever. Rev Run and his wife, Justine, continue to teach their kids to celebrate success and endure pain with their unique outlook on life. You'll once again find yourself laughing at their everyday lives and household hijinks.
The past three seasons of Run's House has brought you the often-hilarious struggles of Rev Run, who has tried to strike a balance between being a father, a reverend and an icon while keeping America's first family of hip-hop securely grounded. From homework and sex education to a Las Vegas wedding and Run's oldest daughter, Vanessa, appearing half-naked in Maxim magazine, the family has proven it's able to laugh at itself, and we laughed along with them.
While season 2 of Run's House ended with the family looking forward to welcoming a new baby to the household, season 3 began with the unexpected loss of Rev Run and Justine's newborn, Victoria Anne Simmons. Season 4 of Run's House finds the family at the beginning of a summer full of surprises. Rev Run's daughters are anxious to fly the coop and move to Los Angeles, while Run and Justine prepare their home for a possible new addition to the family. JoJo is graduating from high school and on a quest for a record label deal, Diggy is starting to like girls and Russy is growing up fast. But when circumstances pull Angela and Vanessa from their New York City apartment, they land back at Run's House for the summer, and Rev Run knows this could be the last time his entire family is under one roof.
Last season, the Simmons clan had a year of extreme highs and lows, and now Rev Run hopes they can enjoy some of their best times together. Bill Cosby worked his way into American hearts through his great talent as a comedian and actor, but there has always been more to Bill Cosby than any laugh line can convey. He is also a man of ideas and a man who cares deeply about his country.

Cosby is also a man who cares deeply about the breakdown of the family and social cohesion among black Americans -- especially among young black men and boys. In his new book, Come on, People: On the Path from Victims to Victors [Thomas Nelson], Cosby teams up with Harvard University psychiatrist Alvin F. Poussaint to confront many of these issues head-on. The book is as courageous as it is timely.

"For the last generation or two, as our communities dissolved and our parenting skills broke down, no one has suffered more than our young black men," Cosby and Poussaint lament. They face the issues honestly and do not mince words. At the same time, they place these challenges within the context of what they also see as continuing prejudice against black Americans. The essence of their argument is that while black America can blame others for many of the challenges they face, they hold the key to their own recovery through personal and group achievement and responsibility.

Consider a paragraph like this:

We are calling on men, all men, the successful and the unsuccessful, the affluent and the poor, the married and the unmarried, to come and claim their children. You can run the biggest drug cartel in America or win the Super Bowl, but if you haven't claimed your children, you are not a man. You can make all the excuses you want, but no one can stop you from claiming your children. It's not about you. It's about them. If you have not come to claim your children, you have stolen their hope. You have stolen any kind of feeling that they are worth something. They will likely have no sense of the past, little pride, and even less faith in the future. They will see fathers at the mall or on TV and they will wonder how stupid or ugly they must be to have driven their fathers away.

The authors lament the breakdown of marriage and fatherhood most of all, tracing most of the pathologies they cite to that cause. They also note that even under the worst oppression by others, black Americans had held their families together or had done their very best to do so. These pathologies are now self-inflicted.

This paragraph should haunt all Americans:

There is one statistic that captures the bleakness. In 1950, five out of every six black children were born into a two-parent home. Today, that number is less than two out of six. In poor communities, that number is lower still. There are whole blocks with scarcely a married couple, whole blocks without responsible males to watch out for wayward boys, whole neighborhoods in which little girls and boys come of age without seeing up close a committed partnership and perhaps never having attended a wedding.

Just think about that -- whole blocks of children growing up without ever seeing a married couple up close or having attended a wedding. The problem can be traced to the breakdown of marriage and the absence of fathers, they argue. In their words, "Parenting works best when both a mother and father participate. Some mothers can do it on their own, but they need help. A house without a father is a challenge. A neighborhood without fathers is a catastrophe, and that's just about what we have today."

Bill Cosby has raised these issues before, but never with a presentation and articulation as forceful and comprehensive as Come On, People. Christians will want to take many of the arguments beyond where Cosby and Poussaint leave them, but all will recognize the courage represented by this brave book.

Here, for example, is a passage in which the authors deal with the shift in young male sexual behavior and its consequences:

As we became older and grew more interested in girls, our hormones raged just as boys' hormones rage today. The Internet may be new. Cell phones may be new. But sex, we don't need to tell you, has been around since Adam and Eve. So has shame. We knew that if one of us got a girl pregnant, not only would she have to visit that famous "aunt in South Carolina," but young Romeo would have to go too, not to South Carolina maybe, but somewhere. It would be too embarrassing for Romeo's family for him to just sit around in the neighborhood with a fat Cheshire cat smile on his face.

And there was something else we understood: that girl likely had a daddy in the home. And he'd be prepared to wipe that grin off Romeo's face permanently. This was what parenting was about. It wasn't always pretty, but it could be pretty effective.

For no good reason we can understand, society seems to be telling young black men that fatherhood is no big thing. Society tells young people in general to look after number one and to worry about everyone else later, if at all. Like the sixteen-year-old on the TV show---if you don't like the outcome, walk away. Even if you get married and you're not happy, walk away. With all the temptations to walk away, the black divorce and separation rate today is 50 percent higher than the white rate. And black women who divorce are considerably less likely to remarry than white divorcees, partly because of the shortage of black males.

Without being told and told often, young men simply do not know or understand what a father's responsibilities are. Many of them have never seen a real father in action. Many do not appreciate that fathers are important to a child's healthy development or that unemployed, separated, and unwed fathers can still interact with their children and contribute significantly to their well-being.

The issues Cosby and Poussaint address are important to all Americans, and every American has a personal stake in the recovery these authors hope to encourage.

I do not believe that Mormonism leads to salvation. I believe that it is a false gospel that however sincere and kind its adherents may be, leads to eternal death rather than to eternal life. I believe that Mormonism is a prime example of what the Apostle Paul warned the Church to reject " a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you" [Galatians 1: 8-9 ] Mormonism is not just another form of Christianity. What's your take on Mormonism, do you see it as a false gospel or what?

Della Reese Lett is "founder and minister" of her own New Thought congregation, known as the Understanding Principles of Better Living Church. According to the group's Web site:

We know that filling this hunger is the greatest need in the world today. We are the religion for the New Age.

Our basic message is that man, through his God-nature, can be the victor of circumstances rather than a victim of circumstances; that no matter what happens to him, man can learn to cope with and overcome any and all obstacles. At Understanding Principles for Better Living, we do not attempt to teach you what to think, but rather how to think so that you may go forth into the Infinite Mind and experience a revelation of Truth that is right for you.

The group teaches that "man can learn to cope with and overcome any and all obstacles" by going forth into the "Infinite Mind." Della Reese Lett may have been the star of "Touched by an Angel," but no angel in the Bible ever instructed humans to "go forth into the Infinite Mind." Not by a long shot. What do you think about this New Age Movement? When did our people get so far from God's word?

How should Christians respond when we are ask "How do you know that Jesus was never married?" The answer is that we know Jesus was not married because Scripture is very clear that Jesus was not married. Is there a proof-text for that fact? No, but it is written into the very warp and woof of the fabric of the New Testament. Jesus' purpose was not to come and marry and establish an earthly dynasty, but to come and save sinners. There is no wife at the cross; it is Jesus' mother, and she is given into the care of one of His disciples. The entire context there is of one who was not married. Also, of course, had Jesus truly been married, it is impossible that this would not have been recorded and told by the enemies of the Gospel, as well as by its friends. Did you read the book? What was your take on it? Could you answer that question with out delay?

Did you catch the Salt-N-Pepa Show last nite? I love me some reality T.V especially when it's something good. Rev Run will be back in Nov to me that is one of the best. I found this article over on High Cotton.

Female hip-hop pioneers Cheryl "Salt" Wray and Sandy "Pepa" Denton came out swinging from the show's opening scenes. It seems that ever since Salt abruptly left the legendary group almost a decade ago, Pepa has harbored resentment at being abandoned. Salt, meanwhile, has happily moved on, found God and is enjoying living the suburban life as a stay-at-home mom and wife. The two get a chance to air their grievances and in the end a relunctant Salt agrees that she will perform with Pepa for NBA baller Shaq O'Neal�s upcoming party.

The duo appear to be getting along great as they happily prepare to hit the stage again when Pepa can't help but try to slide in some risque moves on a man brought on stage during practice. Salt begins to feel uncomfortable and let's Pepa know she's beginning to doubt her decision to reconcile. After the two cool off, Salt breaks the news to Pepa that the Shaq gig is off, but that she has the perfect place for their first performance: her church. Hold up! What?

Old habits die hard for Pepa when they rock the sanctuary with a remixed version of their hit �Whatta Man.� Salt has to tap Pepa in the midst of the routine to keep her from nearly dropping it like it�s hot for the mega-church congregation.

Bush ask Congress for 46 billion more to bankroll wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and said he wants the money by Christmas. The fighting in Iraq, in its 5th year, already has cost more than 455 billion. Democrats "Says don't look for a rubber-stamp." What do you think should we be putting that much money into wars? The president plan to spend another trillion dollars for a 10 year war in Iraq. We must end this war, How do we get out?

He still don't get it. 24 years of age and life is taken he no place. I am tired of saying that life don't own you anything and I don't either. Drugs is the enemy but of course he is in denial. I think you can. If you are firm in your beliefs, pledging into and organization should not change that. It is important to remember that fraternities and sororities are just like any other organization. They can be used for corrupt means like some churches can be. There are weak-minded people in all organization in which there organization becomes there god. In the Black Church fraternities and sororities are service organization founded on Christian principles. I think that is why the talk was that Dr. King was not a Christian because of his involvement in a fraternity. What do you think about Christian pledging to these organizations (Mason, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, ect....)Can you be a Christian?
