Video : Steven Gerrard Wins England Player Of The Year Award

The Liverpool skipper, 32, edged out Danny Welbeck and Ashley Cole to clinch the award. He received it last night at St George’s Park from England World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton.

Gerrard became England’s sixth cap centurion in November when he chalked up his 100th appearance in the meeting with Sweden.


It was his 11 internationals in 2012, though, that convinced the fans to vote for him as their main man for a second time in the award’s 10-year history.

Gerrard said: “It’s always special to have been recognised by the supporters for doing a good job.
“My dream was to get one cap so to be in the 100 club is really special.”

England boss Roy Hodgson feels Gerrard can inspire the stars of the future.

He said: “The younger players can look at someone who has 100 caps and think, ‘He started at the same age I am but he’s still here 14 years later’. And what a career he’s had.”
