President Goodluck Jonathan has called on security agencies to be mindful of the citizens of the country while carrying out their assignments reassuring that the federal government will take steps to correct the errors made by the soldiers in therecent killings in Bornu state.
Addressing the committee on small arms the president said that it is in keeping with his pledge to work with the United Nations to fight arms proliferation in the world. He called on the United Nations to come up with comprehensive approach to the control of small arms and light weapons.
The president decried the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and urged the committee to establish links with agencies that can help them build capacity and strengthen regional cooperation to combat illicit trafficking of small arms.
Turning to the 26 man committee on dialogue and peaceful resolution of security challenges in the north the president prayed Allah to give them the wisdom to succeed saying that without peace there will be no development.
He charged them to establish a link and open up dialogue with members of the Boko Haram sect as well as develop a framework through which dialogue willtake place and work out an option that will lead to the successful granting of amnesty to the group.
He called on Nigerians to give the committees all the necessary support.
The committee on dialogue and peaceful resolution will seat for three months while that for small arms is a standing committee.
