Two Killed As OOU Students Protest.

Two students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun state have been shot dead and many others injured by men of the Police Force attached to the Ogun state police command in an ongoing student protest that started on Monday morning.

According to information gathered, students in their scores reportedly stormed the entrance of the school’s permanent site at about 7:30am on Monday, to kick against the policy of class repetition recently introduced by the school for failure to pay school fees on time.

The students accused the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Saburi Adesanya, of turning the higher institution of learning into a secondary school.

According to an eye-witness simply identified as Ken, he said, “One minute we were talking and laughing with the Policemen, the next minute they opened fire at us.”

Information has it that the VC allegedly called the Governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and informed him of the development, and immediately the Governor reportedly sent a troop of police and mobile police down to the school, with an armored tank to maintain peace in the school.

But the reverse was the case when the police got to the school and they started shooting the students for closing the school gate.

As at the time of compiling this report, 2 students have been confirmed dead in the sporadic shooting by the men of the police, while over 20 have sustained various degrees of injuries.

The protest by the students is the third in six months and has disrupted the Faculty of Law’s examination earlier scheduled to start on Monday.

Several students, including the university’s student union president, Ogunjimi James, have been arrested and detained at Ijebu igbo police station, the report says.

It was also confirmed that many students are now trapped inside the school premises and not allowed to go out, while some policemen are still on standby spraying tear gas.

Itunu Fagade, a female student, who took to the social media and wrote on her Facebook wall, says ” I am presently inside the bush, some are injured and some are almost dead, Please help us contact people who can help. Please help. sobbing”

Efforts made to speak to the school VC by Reporters proved abortive, and call to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police did not go through as the phone was permanently switch off.

Oba Akanni Of Ado-Odo Beaten, Stripped, & Palace Burnt.

Oba Akanni of Ado-Odo area of Ogun State was beaten and stripped, and his palace was razed by some aggrieved youths. The monarch, had been having a running battle with some interest groups in the community, who allegedly did not want him despite a Supreme Court judgement validating his appointment three years ago. Oba Akanni was hospitalised following the severe beating he received from the rampaging youths. The burnt palace has also been deserted as wives, children, family members and servants fled the area apparently for fear of being attacked again.

Trouble started for the traditional ruler when his SUV was flagged down by some people in the community. In the process of attending to the people, the unsuspecting monarch was dragged out of his vehicle, beaten and stripped.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Muyiwa Oladipo,
Oladipo said there were ways the people could adopt to show their displeasure over the installation of the monarch that was reinstalled by the Supreme Court of the land rather than resorting to burning of houses, beating people and harassing the monarch.

He called on all the sons and daughters of the community to come and tender relevant information that could be of assistance in resolving the crisis.

Four Family Members Die On Daughter’s Graduation Day.

Friday is usually a special day many Muslim families look forward to, but to the members of the Bello family of Bayeku area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, Friday, April 6, 2013 will remain fresh in their memories for some time to come.

That was the day four members of the family and a neighbour died prematurely in an auto crash. A five months old baby of the family escaped the incident unhurt.

Prior to that day, the family had planned triple celebrations: their daughter’s graduation ceremony, car dedication of their son and the head of the family’s trip abroad.
The head of the family, popularly called Alhaji Bello, was a prominent figure in Bayeku following his sponsorship of many Muslim programmes including the recent turbanning of the first Imam of the community which took place the Sunday preceding his sudden death.

As part of the arrangements for the trip abroad, Alhaji Bello had placed a change of name notice in Vanguard which was published on the day of crash. The family had not even bought a copy of the paper before the accident occurred around 12noon at Agbowa-Ikosi area of Lagos State.

Five persons including the five month old baby were in one of the cars the family members were travelling in while two others were in another as they headed for the graduation ceremony of their daughter at a tertiary educational institution in Ogun State.

All the five persons in one car with the exception of the baby: Alhaji Bello, his daughter- in- law and her parents, together with a neighbour, died while the matriarch and her son in the other car survived.

An eye witness, Madam Kehinde Olufade, said the family had had a smooth journey until they approached a crater at Ikosi where motorists had to slow down. But due to the dilapidated nature of Agbowa road, a trailer left its own side of the road and faced the car Alhaji Bello was driving, forcing him to maneuver before a tipper rammed into him from behind. The car landed in a ditch.

‘’As soon as the car landed in the ditch, the tipper also lost control and fell on top of the car killing the four members of the family and their neighbour on the spot. The Bellos daughter-in-law, who was carrying her five months old baby at the time of incident, died while the baby miraculously survived”, the eye witness narrated

When the news of their demise filtered into their community, it unsettled residents. The community development association (CDA) wanted the victims buried before sunset in accordance with Muslim tradition, but some indigenes countered them, saying some rituals must be performed before the arrival of the corpses in the community as the death of the family members portended a bad omen.

‘Missing’ Tai Solarin College Of Education Undergraduates Found In Dubai.

Three female undergraduates of Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu, Ogun State, who were declared missing have been sighted in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates(UAE).

The students, Omoeneme Maureen, Ajao Aminat Romoke and Oludegun Morufat Olayinka, have been missing from the school for several weeks, and had become a source of worry for the college management and their parents.

The school authorities and the families of the 3 100 level French students had searched various parts of the state including various accidents scenes and mortuaries during the search for the students.

There had also been rumours that ritualists might have kidnapped and used the ladies for ulterior actions.

One of the girls eventually made contact and told a search party that they were in Dubai to seek greener pastures.

When contacted, the Registrar of the College, Tunji Kanimodo, confirmed the story, adding that the students’ action was amazing.

Mr. Kanimodo said, the police had been informed that the girls were in the United Arab Emirates.

He said the students had paid their fees and registered for the ongoing academic session before they went missing; and the school authorities would wait for appropriate action by the police before it takes further actions.

3 Killed, 4 Injured In Two Auto Crashes In Ogun State.

Three persons were on Sunday crushed to death in two separates auto crashes that occurred on Abeokuta-Sagamu and Papalantoro-Ilaro roads in Ogun State.

Confirming the incidents, Itori Unit Commander of FRSC, Mr Fatai Bakare, said that both accidents happened at the early hours of the Sunday.

Bakare  said ” two people died on Papalantoro-Ilaro road when a Nissan Car with registration number  LAGOS  LND 121 BH lost control and rammed into a commercial motorbike killing the rider and his passenger.

“But only one person died on Abeokuta-Sagamu accident when two articulated vehicles with registration number LAGOS XU 320 LND and LAGOS 777 FST had a head-on collision around LAFRAGE Cement Company of the expressway.

“All the victims were males and their bodies have been deposited at Ifo General Hospital.

“Four persons sustained different degrees of injuries in both accidents including the driver of the car and has been taken to a hospital for treatments

Photos: Generator Fume Kills 3 Friends In Their Sleep In Ogun State.

Three friends identified as Saka Adeosun, 15, Kadri Akanbi, 20 and Wale Kola Ola, 18, have died in their sleep after inhaling generator fume.

The incident took place at 109/111, Alakuko Road, Akera area of Agbado, a suburb of Ogun State. The three friends were apprentices in a welder and vulcaniser’s shop partitioned with plywood.

They were sleeping in one of the shops and left the generator working on the other side when they died in their sleep after inhaling the fume. The incident was reported at Ayila Police Station.

Mr. Shoremi Moses, the landlord of the shops where the incident happened, reported to the police that the three youths had died in their sleep.

When the policemen arrived the scene of the incident, they discovered that the victims were foaming from their mouth, ear and nose, an indication that they were choked to death by the generator fume.
Meanwhile, the families of the deceased have told the police that there was no need for post mortem to be carried out since nobody was responsible for their death. The bodies were subsequently released to them and they have been buried.

When P.M.NEWS visited the police station, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Supol Daniel Okere, was said to have gone to the Area Command.

But a source at the station confirmed that since the families of the deceased wanted them buried without any form of test conducted on them, the corpses have been released to them for burial.
“The families said they don’t want any test to be conducted on them, so we have released the corpses to them for burial,” a police source said.

5,000 Rendered Homeless as Fire Razes Ogun Community.

No fewer than 5000 persons, Wednesday, were rendered homeless and property worth millions of naira destroyed, following a fire outbreak at Kara, Isheri, Ogun State. Daily Post newspaper reports that the fire which began around 6.30pm was caused by a resident who was cooking in one of the wooden rooms. The fire razed all the makeshift structures, opposite the cattle market, popularly called Zaria Estate, but no live was lost.
