Naomie Harris has given Idris Elba her vote for him to become the first black James Bond.

The Skyfall actress said that she believes the Luther star would be well suited to role after she worked alongside him Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

Harris, 36, also revealed that Elba had been in talks with  007 producer Barbara Broccoli about the potential to become the secret agent.

Speaking to the Huffington Post, Naomie, who plays Eve in the 23rd installment of the franchise, admitted that she was oblivious to the fact Idris had been hotly tipped as the next Bond.

She said: 'I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond.

'And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.'

But despite getting Naomie's backing, last year Idris said if he were to become the next Bond he would not be happy if the attention was purely focused on the colour of his skin.

Talking to U.S. radio station NPR, he said: 'My Dad and I were talking about this the other day because he said 'You could do it, would you do it?' I was like 'Yeah, I would do it, but I just don't want to be called the first black James Bond'. Do you understand what I 'm saying?

'Sean Connery wasn't the Scottish James Bond and Daniel Craig wasn't the blue-eyed James Bond.

'So if I played him, I don't want to be called the black James Bond.'
