EFCC re-arrests convicted, freed pension boss that stole N23bn

Less than 24 hours after he was convicted and freed by an Abuja Court, John Yakubu Yusuf, a former assistant director in the federal civil service, has been re-arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Mr. Yusuf was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison on Monday after he admitted to taking part in the embezzlement of N33 billion by pension administrators. He was however, given an option of fine of N250, 000, which he promptly paid.

The EFCC, however, said Mr. Yusuf still has cases to answer.

The Commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, who confirmed the arrest, said that there are other related crimes that Mr. Yusuf could have committed that the commission is looking into. He however, refused to confirm whether the ex-pension boss will be re-tried.

The very light sentence meted out to Mr. Yusuf was condemned by several Nigerians. The sentence has been described as a handshake and a reward for criminality.

Mr. Yusuf’s sentencing is the first conviction in an elaborate scam that came to light early 2012 involving several top officials, offices and banks.
