Wigan Athletic secured one of the biggest upsets in modern FA Cup history after beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final.
Ben Watson’s header a minute into added time sent the 23,000 Latics fans into ecstasy as they watched their team go on to win the Cup for the first time.
The magnitude of the achievement was illustrated not only by the two teamsheets, but the league table, where Wigan sits 16 places behind City and also the difference in resources between one of Europe’s richest clubs and one of the top-flight minnows.
A flat final had been brought to life by Pablo Zabaleta’s 84thminute red card, but it needed Watson’s brilliant last-minute act to avoid the 30 minutes of extra time.
