2 STUDENT REPORTEDLY SHOT DEAD DURING OOU STUDENTS PROTEST

Violence had rocked the Ago Iwoye campus of the Olabisi Onabanjo University on Monday.As early as 7.30 am, students had stormed the gates of the institution which they succeeded in locking. Only to reportedly have two students of the university shot dead with several others wounded following an ongoing protest about against some of the “anti-students policy” of the school’s management.

According to StreetJournal, some of the students revealed that one of the new policies stipulates that any student who does not pay school fees on time would not be allowed into the exam hall, which could mean an extra year for some.

Policemen were however on the scene not long after and arrests were reportedly made. Students claimed policemen opened fire on them and in minutes, the story was trending on Twitter, with the pictures above.

However, the police have denied that they shot students dead.
Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesman of the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force. Adejobi said:

They went violent this morning and some of our men were deployed to disperse them. The operation was led by a Deputy Commissioner and no live bullet was used so the issue of killing does not arise at all.”
They are just using the issue of killing to seek public sympathy. We don’t kill. That was the same thing they said when there was a crisis in Tai Solarin University of Education in Omu Ijebu, they said policemen killed four students. No one saw the bodies. That is what they always say to win public sympathy”.

When he was told by Street Journal’s reporter that pictures of one of those feared dead in the protest were already on the internet, Adejobi who disclosed that he had seen the picture said “we know the way students try to get sympathy. Let them produce the corpse in the picture. They should bring the corpse to the police.”

DELSU student hacks into Uduaghan’s phone— Vanguard

A 400-level medical student of Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, in Delta State, has been arrested by the police for allegedly hacking into Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s phone.
The student, who failed in pharmacology and pathology course sent a text message, purportedly from the governor, to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Eric Arubayi, requesting him to upgrade his scores.
Vanguard gathered that enraged Govenor Uduaghan asked the vice chancellor to report the matter to the police and ensure the student was arrested when the matter was brought to his knowledge, as he never sent such message.

The affected student in a statement to the police, however,denied the allegation.
Investigation by Vanguard showed that the matter was causing ripples in the university, as the university authorities, apparently responding to the request, upgraded the score of the student in pharmacology.
The poser by concerned stakeholders is: Assuming, but not conceding that the text message emanated from the governor, should the vice chancellor have altered the scores of a student that failed his examination?”
This is, however, not the first time the governor’s phone had been hacked into by fraudsters. They had hacked into his Airtel and MTN phone numbers in the past as well as his email address.
The first text message to the vice chancellor on July 24 reads: “My able VC, Chief Tony Anenih called me in respect of one boy that just wrote pathology and pharmacology exam in 400 level Medicine. My able Prof, I want you to ensure that boy passes, you know I cannot afford to disappoint Chief Tony Anenih. Amin a meeting. These are the details. CHS/04/05/88406.”

Thinking that the text message was actually from the governor, as it came from the number with which he saved the governor’s name, Uduaghan 1 in his phone,Prof Arubayi replied, asking for the student’s name to which the hacker replied: “His name is Imala W. Kelly. My able VC, all I want is the boy to pass. Chief Tony Anenih has been calling.”
DELSU vice chancellor, Prof Arubayi, confirmed to Vanguard in his office, Monday, that he, in fact, received the said text message and contacted the governor after the scores of students who scored between 48-49 in pharmacology was upgraded to 50 based on standing regulation of the university, “but he denied ever sending me such a text message.”
He said the Academic Board of the College of Health Sciences hadmet and approved the scores in pathology, which the student scored 46, and there was nothing that could be done about it, other than for the affected person to go for a resit, adding: “That is what I advised the governor.”
Prof Arubayi told Vanguard that itwas the Provost of the College of Sciences, Dr. John Ohaju-Obodo, that drew his attention about a week after that a text message, purportedly from the governor, appointing him chairman of a juicy government committee was received by him, but when he contacted the governor, he told him it was a scam.

He said he wasted no time when he confirmed the truth from the governor in summoning the student and handing him over tothe police for cyber crime.
“I am even surprised that the police have not charged him to court, as far as I am concerned, this is an EFCC case,” he said.
He said the student was currentlyfacing a disciplinary panel for breach of matriculation oath, but lamented that he had not appeared before the panel.
A university source said the student had been suspended, but as at Monday, he was seen attending lectures and had refused to vacate his room despite orders to that effect fromthe authorities.
Prof Arubayi laughed when told by Vanguard that he was being accused of examination malpractice, saying, “Did the student give me money to change his scores or is he a girl to say that she is my girlfriend, what was done was based on the regulation of the school,”

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Chukwuemeka Peter Aloamaka and provost, Dr Ohaju –Obodo told Vanguard that no unilateral decision was taken by the vice chancellor, as the appropriate organ looked into the matter before upgrading the scores of five to six students based on the institution’s regulation.

1.2M JAMB-UTME CANDIDATES WON'T GAIN ADMISSION - FG

The Federal Government on Saturday said of the 1,735,720 students that registered for this year's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, only 520,000 will gain admission.
Addressing journalists at the Federal Government College, Suleja, Niger State, after monitoring the examination, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, blamed this on the low-carrying capacity of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria.


She said, "The major challenge is a country like Nigeria having 1.7 million sitting for examination. The space we have is 520,000 for federal, states, private universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
"If one million passed, what are we going to do with the rest 500,000? We will not expand the carrying capacity without expanding the facilities.
"What are we going to do with the large number of students out there? I feel the pain. Mr. President is very much concerned. If you have students that have passed examination and they cannot have access, you can imagine their thought in the long run."
Rufai called on private firms and individuals to invest in tertiary education.
Responding to a question on the high fees charged by private universities, she said the legal department was looking into the ministry's right to challenge the fees.

Although she agreed that private investors had the right to recoup their money, the minister said government would consider legal options to regulate the situation.
The minister also denied knowledge of any White Paper recommending the scrapping of the UTME and the National Examination Council.
She said, "It has become a very controversial issue. I have made a statement before the National Assembly that the Federal Government has a white paper on this. I'm not aware that NECO and JAMB will be scrapped. If we are not aware, what are we going to make an analysis out of? Government has not taken decision on that."

Rufai further blamed improper shading of answer sheets by candidates for non-release of their results.
"If they don't shade their papers correctly, they may not have results," she added.
Meanwhile, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has arrested a middle-aged man who was identified as Isaac, for alleged impersonation at one of the Dual Based Test centres in Abuja.

"The owner of the slip is from Enugu. He came here to impersonate another person. He had been handed over to civil defence who will hand him over to the police," he said.
Meanwhile, no fewer than nine candidates were feared dead, while six were injured in an auto crash on the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway on Friday.
The victims were said to be on their way to their examinations centre.
Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Aba.
He said seven persons including the driver died instantly, while two others died later in hospital.
Ogbonna said the candidates were travelling on a Hiace bus with number plate Rivers XY 249.
He explained that the driver, around 10.40am rammed into a truck with number plate Lagos XC 109 SLK, which was parked off the road at Obeaku-Ihie, Ugwunagbor Local Government Area of Abia State.

Observer Calls For Special ConsiderationFor JAMB Candidates

As candidates write the UTME/JAMB 2013 Examination , an externalexamination observer in Abuja , Mr Moses Ojo , has called the authoritiesto create avenues to solve subject irregularities.

Ojo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)on Saturday in Abuja that a lot of candidates had issues of subject irregularities which might result in their outright failure.
``While observing activities at the Model Secondary School , Maitama centre, I noticed that some students were given the wrong combination of question papers.

``This could lead to the candidates ’ failure, as a result of no fault of theirs, but from irregularities that had occurred.
``There is the need for JAMB authorities to create copies of each subject to be given to students who experiencesuch irregularities.”
Ojo commended JAMB for its activities as cases of examination malpractice had been curtailed because students were no longer allowed to take anything to the examination venues.
Meanwhile, the Joint Administration and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) Examination conducted in the FCT was devoid of irregularities while candidates reported promptly, a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)check has showed.

NAN reports that as at 6.30 am when the examinations were expected to commence at various centres, candidates were seen waiting for invigilators inan orderly manner.
However, a NAN correspondent who visited some examinationvenues, observed that the atmosphere was calm and there were reports of examination malpractice.
At the Government Secondary School , Tudun Wada and Government Secondary School , Garki, officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were seen providing security to forestall any disorder or violence.

However, there were cases of late arrival of examination materials at both centres, as students were seen in queue, waiting for the examination to commence.
``They told us that the examinations will start 6:30 this morning and this is 9 am, and yet we have not started,” Ahmed Hussein, a candidate at the GSS Tudun Wada centre, told NAN.
At Government secondary school, Garki, late arrival of examination materials delayed the commencement of examinations.

BABCOCK UNIVERSITY RELEASES SCHOOL FEES FOR NEXT SESSION. STUDENT PROTEST

Well, they are not protesting in school or complaining to their school administration.

..they are protesting via the media. A few students from the school have sent me mails complaining about the exorbitant fees they are being made to pay to get an education. The university just released the school fees for the next session and some of the students feel its outrageous. See it below...

The students are scared to protest in their school because they could get suspended. Babcock is a Christian University and claims to be a non-profit organization, so students don't understand why they have to pay such huge amounts to school there. But here's my thing; complaining about the school fees of a private university is like complaining about the cost of a first class plane ticket. You have other options; business class, premium economy class, economy class. If this is too much for you, move to a federal school, state school or less expensive private schools. Not that I support these fees, I think it's ridiculous. You pay N3million a session to become a doctor and when you eventually get a job, you make less than N200 thousand a month...doesn't make much sense to me...but that's the way the school wants to operate. You either take it or leave it! What do you guys think?

But meanwhile, is there anything the federal government can do for these students? Like, make their University bring down the fees?

WAEC WITHHELD HIS RESULT FIVE TIMES, NOW LASPOTECH'S BEST STUDENT

Bakare Opeoluwa’s courage to stand strong in the face of adversity is legendary. Five times, he sat for the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination and five times his results were withheld. Not because he was involved in any examination malpractice, but for reasons best known to the West African Examination Council.
After his sixth attempt, his full result was however released. He cleared all his papers and applied to the university to read Computer Engineering, his dream discipline. But this was not to be, as his score was below the cut-off point. That is why he opted for polytechnic education and eventually got admission to study Computer Engineering at the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu.
But in spite of his challenges, Bakare, who had lost his father, graduated on Thursday as the best LASPOTECH graduating student during the institution’s 21st convocation. With a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.97 out of a possible 4.0, Bakare bagged a Higher National Diploma certificate in Computer Engineering. He also made history by becoming the all-time best graduate of the polytechnic.

3 MISSING STUDENT OF TAI SOLARIN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION OGUN STATE FOUND IN DUBAI

The girls were declared missing by the college authorities.
Three female undergraduates of Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu, Ogun State, who were declared missing have been sighted in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates(UAE), PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.
The students, Omoeneme Maureen, Ajao Aminat Romoke and Oludegun Morufat Olayinka, have been missing from the school for several weeks, and had become a source of worry for the college management and their parents.


The school authorities and the families of the three100 level French students, had searched various parts of the state including various accidents scenes and mortuaries during the search for the students.
There had also been rumours that ritualists might have kidnapped and used the ladies for ulterior actions.
One of the girls eventually made contact and told a search party that they were in Dubai to seek greener pastures.
When contacted, the Registrar of the College, Tunji Kanimodo, confirmed the story, adding that the students’ action was amazing.

Mr. Kanimodo told PREMIUM TIMES that the police had been informed that the girls were in the United Arab Emirates.
He said the students had paid their fees and registered for the ongoing academic session before they went missing; and the school authorities would wait for appropriate action by the police before it takes further actions.

Open University Not Accredited to Run Law Programme

The body regulating legal education in the country, the Council of Legal Education, Tuesday said the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) had not been accredited to run law degree programme.
Speaking in Abuja at a briefing to commence the 50 years anniversary of the Nigerian Law School, the Chairman of the Council, Mr Onueze Okocha, said anyone who studied law at NOUN and hoping to secure admission to the Nigerian Law School was merely wasting his time and resources.
He explained that NOUN did not have the necessary pre requisites such as moot court, lecturers among others to run a degree in law.

He advised those already studying law at NOUN to transfer to accredited universities.
He said: “It is a foolhardy for someone to establish a university, put in his money and then choose to run an illegal faculty of law.”
Okocha said the Council of Legal Education operated under law and therefore would continue to implement the law.
He also dismissed claims thatthe council might eventually accredit the law programmebeing run by non-accredited universities.

He said: “I don’t want them to waste their monies and time. They should seek transfer to accredited universities.”
Also speaking, the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr. Tahir Mamman, said anyone who only wanted to have an acquitance with the law, could go to a non-accreditedu

niversity to study law.
He said: “But if they want to become legal practitioners, they have to go to accredited universities.”
Mamman said the list of universities accredited to run law programme had been published and any oneinterested should endeavour to look up for it before putting in for law in any of the universities.
Speaking on the proposed amendment of the law establishing the Council of Legal Education, Okocha stated that the amendment would allow the law school to be best administered.

He said: “It must be noted that the proposals, for restructuring and re-organisation of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Law School, are geared towards improving the content and quality of the Legal Educationin Nigeria, and ensure that the legal practitioners produced by the Nigerian Law School are duly equipped with requisite character and learning, so that they may be better enabled to discharge their duties and responsibilities in that regard, not just in Nigeria, but throughout the world.”

P0RNOGRAPHY CASE: COVENANT UNIVERSITY WAS RIGHT TO EXPEL STUDENT – COURT

The law suit filed by 20-year-old Longji Felix Vwamhi, a 400 level student of Information and Communication Technology Department of Covenant University against the institution, has been struck out by Justice Mobolaji Ojo of an Ogun High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun state on Wednesday.

Vwamhi had challenged the institution over his expulsion for being in possession of pornógraphic materials in his laptop.

The case was dismissed for lack of merit.

It would be recalled that Vwamhi was on November 27, 2012 expelled from the institution following the outcome of the Disciplinary Committee set up by the university which found him guilty of being in possession of pornógraphic materials and indecent dressing.

The Covenant University, its Vice Chancellor and Chancellor were the first, second and third defendants, respectively while Felix’s mother, Mrs
Indo Felix Vwamhi of Block House 13 Mbora Estate, Abuja was a co-plaintiff in the suit.

While delivering his judgment, Justice Ojo found out that the student had indeed violated the university regulations as contained in chapter 4, section 35 of its student’s hand book which prohibits public display or possession of pornógraphic films or photograph.

He noted that the student also admitted being in possession of the laptop containing the pornógraphic materials and sharing same laptop with friends in the school.

He affirmed that the panel set up by the university to try the student did not violate section 36 of the 1999 constitution as amended and the principles of “Audi Alterem Partem and Nemo Judex in Causa Sua” . That one cannot be a judge in his own course.”

According to him, the claimant did not state categorically that the chairman of the panel was biased being the Dean of Students Affairs whose staff investigated the student in question.

The Judge also faulted the claimant’s counsel for his inability to file counter affidavit against the issues raised by the respondents, adding that, in a situation where the party to a dispute could not file counter affidavit it would be assumed he admitted.

Justice Ojo however, stated that the school authority should reconsider the passionate appeal made by the student’s father to revisit and review the decision of the Student Disciplinary Committee to avert possible miscarriage of justice and colossal human and material wastage.

The father pleaded with the university authority to tamper justice with mercy and recall the student, stressing that he needs encouragement to complete his education, having spent four years already.

This, to me, will automatically eradicate about 50 per cent of Nigeria’s problems. Also, a simple advice for all students is that the road to success is not on a straight path. Patience is a very important virtue that should be put to good use.”

“My father, Dr. Mike Olufemi Taiwo is a dental surgeon and a retired army officer. He is from Lagos State. My mother, Mrs. Ajoke Lillian Olu-Taiwo is a business consultant. She hails from Kogi State.

My parents modelled my life the way it is today. They took time to instil discipline in me. I was born and raised in the great city of Kano. Tunji’s father who spoke with Vanguard about Tunji’s up- bringing said; “I brought up all my children in Kano. I noticed that many parents allow their children freedom to wander about after school which I detested so I made it mandatory for my children to remain home-bound. I was part of their lives. I made sure their home works were done and their books studied on daily basis. I was their mentor and at the same time, their friend.

“Nevertheless, because all work without play makes Jack a dull boy, so I provided indoor games for my children. When they were big enough to play table tennis, I played the game with them. It was fun.

“I also taught them chess and was always beating them, but when Tunji came from Cyprus, he started beating me hands down and I began to marvel. I was not too surprised about the result he made,” said Dr Olu Taiwo.

Lecturer flogs Two Female Students In Uniport For Gallivanting In Class

Two female students of the University of Port-Harcourt, Choba, Rivers State, department of Linguistics and Communication Studies, faculty of Humanities, were flogged on Friday, Sept 21,2012, for gallivanting while class was going on.

The dean of the faculty, Prof O. M. Ndimele, flogged the two female students, while having LCS 100, with the 100 level LCS students, at the Convocation Arena of the school.

We have heard previous reports of Undergraduates flogged or asked to ‘Kneel down’ in schools like Convenant & others.

Although the incident has come and gone, one question that would last for quite a while is “why should a university student be flogged?”

Boys hostel at Igbinedion University burnt down (PHOTOS)

Old Boys hostel, room 183-186 M Block, at Igbinedion University got burnt down some nights back.

Students of the school said the fire was as a result of bad electrical wiring.

Thank God..No life was lost in the inferno but some students lost personal items…

School authorities in all higher institutions seriously need to check mate electrical connections and install fire fighting equipment in hostels .. Even in my school its not different though.
