Cairokee Sold Pepsi, Switch To Coke Now

Money changes people, and no two other people disagree on that. I was surprised to see Pepsi Egypt bought the rights from one of the indie rock band Cairokee. They used this song to sell Pepsi  The song asks people to express themselves. I figured, there's no shame in making an extra dollar if you work hard and do not change your core.

But now in 2012, I am seeing the same band is doing a promo video for Coke through their Coke Studio. Not sure what that means. That will mean they no longer like Pepsi, and that the Coca Cola company has played the band.

Cairokee appeared in a video alongside the Barbadian songstress Shonetelle, they are performing a rendition of Knocking on Heaven's Door. As Cairokee moves slowly toward a fully commercialized band, I am feeling their songs are losing their soul. Instead of activist tone, they are about personal growth and intellect.

Maybe the band thought they will have a bigger audience and gain exposure in new lands--only to be disappointed by how little views the video below has on YouTube. I would love for the band to promote an Egyptian brand and products, not some non-Egyptian brand. No one would speak ill of them if they make a little money, but also help make Egypt a better place.

X Factor Arabia Latest Stunning Updates

X Factor is very close to ending its successful run, they names of the bands and performers is getting shorter by the week, and I think we have surpassed the half point. Every week, the show loses a band/artist. The Egyptian hip-hop R&B band seems to all but have secured winning the first season--if they do they might be the first band to win such a show in the Arab world

Every act is trying to win the title, each has a story to tell, and each wants that contract, but most of all winning the people and their votes. I feel Ibrahim Abdel Azim from Libya might be in the danger zone. Same goes for the Miraya band, they may also be in the same position.

I feel the Moroccan contestant, Mohammed El Rifi will go far, he is the treat that everyone loves, so mark my word he will be among the three finalists. The same goes for Hossam from Lebanon for starter the show is being filmed in Lebanon and I think he will be in for some time. If talent is the only way, the kid from Oman will be traveling far, the dude is a beast on stage--not a great choice.

Marwa had a good night, and the judges showered her with praises. She got better, but not sure if she has the vocal muscles to shine. Iman had a classical song to cover, I think she did well and owned the song--I loved how she took the song and made it work for her. Each judge loves his/her teams, but this is becoming harder to hide as the list narrows.

DOWNLOAD: Massar Egbari New Album البوم فريق مسار اجبارى - اقرا الخبر

Aside from making perhaps the coolest and most artsy and meaning rich album cover, Indie band Massar Egbari makes delightful music, and their new album "Eqra El Khaber" or "Read This News" shows the band has morphed into something huge. Not to mention how the band also has one of the catchiest names MASSAR EGBARI means “Compulsory Detour”, which resembles the society we live in today. They specifically chose this title as it explains how we are expected, or rather, dictated to behave and dress in certain manners. Both, in title and in spirit, the band pokes fun at typical social norms and trends, which is clearly reflected in their music and chosen lyrics.

In 2007 the band made its international debut and has traveled the Arab world (and Turkey) taking their music into new lands. I have come to appreciate their balance in finding good lyrics, and fresh sounding music--while they sound a bit more Western than Egyptian, their stories will always be told in Egypt for some time to come.

It seems that their music constantly gets better, the more live shows they book. They really inject a lot of excitement in the indie music scene  and by the way other than ticket sales and record, they have not gone commercial like doing soda and hair gel ads. This allows them to concentrate on their music, and perfecting their craft. I have also loved how they keep away form politics, yet kept up their connection with the people and their woes.

You get a little funk, a little jazz, some rock and a hell of a ride the minds of the band members have created. I appreciate the variety in vocalists the band features. Unlike many other indie bands in Egypt, MASSAR EGBARI has more than on vocalist who can hook listeners. I love the songs I listened to so far, El-Mroor if funky. The title song plays like a lounge music yet its lyrics are very dark about unemployment. This album is a successful attempt to declare the band's inception into the mainstream.

This April 26, One Iraqi Hit-Maker محمد السالم - قلب قلب In A Virginia Concert

He will be accompanied by the Iraqi pop band UTN1 (Unknown To No One) This is the one concert that will bring all the 50 shades of Iraqis and appreciators of the rich Iraqi music scene  living in the Mid-Atlantic region for a fun night of music that the autnicity of the land it draws its inspirations form. This is a popular hit song that took Iraqi by storm "Qalib Qalib" by the lovable Mohammad ElSalem who has toured the world with this song and other Iraqi songs.

He is a hot commodity and this time, the music will be upped as the Iraqi rock band will be to his side warming up the crowd and doing what the love doing best, live music that brings home to those who long for it. The band walks onstage and look like your there to play through your songs and to have a good time as well. They tend to do their rituals and let the audience let you know you're there.

The interesting thing about the band is that they play through each song until you know whats happening each second. They have mastered each song by playing them off by heart and concentrate on what everyone else is playing. Thus, the band members are a good live musician is one that can feel the pulse of the crowd and become fueled by their energy. It takes more than practice practice practice to be a good musician. Some things can't be taught. UTN1 Band-mates were born with the chops for those live gigs.

As for AlSalem, he is the kind of entertainer who talks to the crowd and allows them to be apart of the show. He knows how to just relax and have fun. He is not a a show-off, but he knows that he is the attraction and the audience appreciate that.

The Best (Winners And Losers) On X Factor Arabia

I think X factor is getting to narrow their list of talented names. They are ready to show off their finest voices and show off. One of those is a guy with the name Ibrahim, he is Libyan and he is ready to make them proud--I like him. He makes good choices and shows a level of maturity when doing cover songs. He might be going home, Elissa and Wael were unkind to him. Hussein and Carole were supportive. He was hurt becasue Libya could not vote due to their issues with telecommunication.

ابراهيم - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

The other lady is Salwa whose talent is hard to miss. She seems to have the face for it, she is ready to entertain. Her covers of those English songs are something of a novelty, she has it figured out. She has the stage presence and gets in the act. She does the rock star persona very well, though her latest performance left something to be desired. She is also the youngest contestant and she is from Morocco.

سلوى أنلوف - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

Merayah, the band that knows what they want and have their own way of doing business. They are a boy band from Egypt who have the sweet and bad boy sides. I think they can do so much more than the soft song they performed. They are a crowd pleasing, but again they song did not allow them to show the happy side.

فرقة مرايا - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

He is the statement on the show and his name is Hussam, he has a strong voice, and a highly classy style. He has been singing fro some time since he was an 8 year old boy. I like this guy, he seems to have his quirks going right for him. He does the old man trapped in a young man's body so well. He is Lebanese and from the same area as Wael Kfoury.

حسام ترشيشي - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

Egypt gets her own lady on X Factor and her name is Marwa. She has that zen when she performer the oldies, she never races in her voice and she seems to need not to worry about her taking a breath. She comes across as comfortable and confident--thanks to growing in a music loving house\hold.

مروى أحمد - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

She is Moroccan and ready for prime time. She started singing in her school and has taken part of a singing show in Morocco. Now she is ready to perform something from Fayrouz. Iman is a strong contender. The judges seem to love her, she chose a song that everyone knows, so messing up in this song means she will go home--I feel she delivered it. She has the Wow factor!

إيمان كركيبو - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

The guy who does not seem to want to be there comes from Jordan. He knows himself and not shopping around for an opinion from pop stars. He has something to share with the world. I like him fro that, he does not sell his charisma, but he sells high quality songs, this is Adham and I think he is a solid voice and he may actually win. I think the judges have challenged him to bring the best in him.  He is very good and Jordan will vote him in and push his brand.

أدهم نابلسي - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

This is the most unique voice, he is a young Moroccan artist. I love his voice, he is very different and no one out there will be able to copy him. Think a unique George Wassouf, a voice that you cannot help but love even so you may not always understand it. The fans love this dude, and give him the votes. Certainly the boys love him. He is the candy of this show, he actually has divided the panle Elissa and Hussein are among his biggest cheerleaders.

محمد الريفي - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

The most talented band on the show, they are the creative force, they bring so much energy and charm , the band members are best of friends, there is so much chemistry. I love the Young Pharoz and something tell me, they are the number one band on the show and they are ready to smoke their competitors out. They are so smooth and Egypt has loved their style. The lady (Shahad) on this trio brings so much flavor in both English and Arabic. They put on a show each has their own talent that sells, but together they are something not to be overlooked.

Young Pharoz - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

Ali or Aly from Saudi Arabia, he is 20 years old and he loves his family so very much. He lacks the stage presence, he is good, but I do not think for the big league. He choses to stay withing the Gulf dialect and he is already a star. He does not know this, people love him, he just does not know how to show how much he loves them back

علي حامد - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

The Omani dude who is like a magician. I love this dude, he always thinks about the song is his last song, so he goes all in. The judges really like him and he is a crowd pleaser  he knows how to show love and appreciation. He does wonders when he holds the microphone. It's safe to say he will go far, because even people outside Oman\love him--he might be the second artists to be born in that country.  Another thing, he performs like he is a Western star focuses on the show part, and not just the song.
المنتصر بالله - العروض المباشرة - الاسبوع 2 - The X Factor 2013

Another band with a very cool name, ninja is ready they come to us from the West, they have the hustle and flow thing going for them. They do rap, and each come with a story they have gone far with the Western bloc of the Arab world. They are all about energy and joy. They are fun to see them live, their fusion works to their advantage. I believe they are Tunisian. They took a challenge and turned a Lebanese dance song to their own style. Tunisians have to be really good to make it out and thoe guys are no different, they hit all the right notes.

WATCH: Mat Elkalam Cairokee اغنية كايروكى - مات الكلام

Egypt's hottest and biggest rock band started as an indie band till they all of a sudden got big. Commercial money started flowing, promoting soft drinks, energy drinks and just about anything. They are covted on TV shows and asked to comment on all things Egypt. They have toured the world and back, and still they are still the most popular band in Egypt.

Their fan base keeps on growing, and they sort of reach out for the cool aisle. More and more they are focused on their look, and outfits. New haircuts and grooming are in order, they now look like every other mainstream American band. What still sets them apart is their lyrics, passion and messages about changes in Egypt.

They are back with a new song that serves as the soundtrack for an upcoming indie film about the Revolution in Egypt. This is an A list film with top talents, the song is way out there, about the meaning of change and to quote, the nightmare in your dreams.

They pick on the security officers in Egypt, their torture and abuse methods. And doing all that in an abandoned building. But do not worry their guitar and vocals are still on the money. This is the anti-establishment, it sets Egypt as the people vs. everyone else including the politicians and people with authority. Amir Eid wrote the dazzling lyrics and I tell you they sound as a shot in the ear. Their fire in the belly is still on.

Rock Stars Cannot Govern Nor Can They Rule

Rock music is about saying no to the man, it's about defying the powers and the authority. But to run a country, you are given powers and authority to apply the rule of law. Naturally, rock stars do not like rules and did hate to be told what to do.

So while Morsi is trying to run the government of Egypt, its people and institutions, some out there are on the streets protesting. They want him in less than six month to bring miracles, to bring order to a very chaotic surrounding. While he has done a fair share of mistakes, I think the people of Egypt--or the ones protesting in the streets are being too quick to jump the gun.

I had those thoughts when I was watching the latest live version of Cairokee's popular song "Spread Your Wings", a rock song about realizing one's true call and living their potential. While clever lyrics are to be celebrated, songs do not really run a country. The politics is messy, we can have heroes all we want, but at the end, they will have to take some steps. Those steps will never be approved by everyone. So difference and resentment is a human nature.

What we cannot do is be violent to one another. Like those police in the streets of Egypt beating up protesters  You should not be doing that. On the flip side, thugs and bullies are also on the streets and those should not be mistaken for real citizens who have concerts for the direction of the country. Cairokee is one of many bands that has engaged in making music about dreams and aspirations, I think this is the right time for such bands to make songs about giving peace a change.

I have no doubt in my mind that Morsi loved Egypt and those who support him love her as much. And yes, those who are protesting him believe in Egypt too and care for it. When the dust settle I do not want to see Egyptians bringing destruction to the Egypt we all love.

On International Women's Day Comes This Subtitled Dream

Women do not exactly have easy in Egypt, it's an observation from watching from the outside and the many dramas airing on TV today.

So this International Women's Day comes a song by one of the finest rappers Egypt have come to know Ahmed Zap Tharwat. He is the socially responsible rapper who promotes good virtue, patriotism and being good. And a first time guest or perhaps the main attraction vocalist Sherine.

Together they have a song about achieve one's dreams--mostly catering to women on their day of empowerment. The song puts to focus all the negative commentary and treatment women are subjected to in Egypt and beyond. They are not the only ones locking in the females. Some even make the case about the mistreatment of women even in places like America.

A song against violence, harassment, and discrimination. It's a smart song about women who want to take a challenge and make something new.  I dig the guitar and the many back stories the music videos brings to light.

These Young Pharos Have Moved Me

On X Factor there is a group of R and B / Rap band made up of there young folks who go to college. There are two dudes and one fine lady that sounds to have come from a place like Chicago or Detroit Motown. They are 17, 18 and 19 years of age and they have already rocked the show unlike any other act.

I am not a big fan of rag tag rap, but these guys really have a working formula to bring a wife audience to their songs--Angry Arabic lyrics and smooth English lines that make you think. The trio blends a number of styles and Arabic dialect to talk about issues of important to the Arab mainstream and the young people. The judges have showered them with love and praises.

Check them out, and get to enjoy their own writing which give them an extra zinger as they take on the stage, they really know how to cheer up the room. They got four Yeses and they indeed deserved everyone of them. I am consider myself a fan, now the burden on them to make a worthy followup for this song that has won them fame.

Marwa Nasr And The Republic Sweet Collaboration

Marwa Nasr teaches boys about the importance of taking care of their ladies. To get more boys interested  she brought the manly band The Republic. In the song, the artist goes the extra mile in telling man what it feels to be a female. You need to put her in your heart, I left everything behind to love you....etc.

A sweet song if you are grownup woman, and there is a lot of love. But the Republic also keeps things in check as a men they have something to say about this ordeal. They have written the English Lyrics and their rap flies very high. Their remix of the song makes it a lot more fun than the original.

Marwa's loving husband and music producer can be seen toward the end working behind the scenes, making sure this is a hit collaboration. I do not find much info on the band, but they got something making them perfect as a guest in those mega summer concerts. I will be surprised if these guys are from anywhere but the US of A.

WATCH: Facebook Addiction Humorous Song فس فس بوك محمد بركات وفريق سلالم فيسبوك 2013

This is the generation whose addiction is different than any other addiction we have seen. They do not do drugs as much, but they are addicts to the social media and here's the song to show you how deep in the shit those people are. An Egyptian band Salalim stands behind this song, not sure how I feel about the Facebook people, but the reality you really will struggle to find information if you are not on Facebook.

My Facebook profile, my cellphone and what's not. This is a fun song for the young in you about how attached folks are to the new Facebook world. It's crazy world out there. They even have got a soccer captain to appear on their song. This is a random song made by few friends and people who are in love with their virtual life.

I do not really want to log out, it's really hard to escape the curse of Facebook, people are giving away too much information and no one knows who is taking a peak--check your privacy policy if you can make sense out of it, enjoy the songs and the band English that comes with this song.

Video: Sudanese Jazz Live By Black Theama

Not sure if this qualify as African jazz or Egyptian jazz, but I am digging it. Black Theama, the band from southern Egypt has been working their acts for a long time. They have taken off because they are different, they are authentic and they know how to give the fans what they want.

Unlike many other bands, the trio makes local music with a mass appeal, they incorporate musical themes from around the globe, but never lose sight of what matters the most--home. Their songs are often simple with musical words and sounds, their music is often upbeat and their style is always smooth and easy flow.

While this concert was filmed in Cairo, where thousands of Sudanese live, the band performed it as if they were in downtown Khartoum.

14 Years Later, Mona Abdel Ghany Returns

In my book and form generation, she was the first pop star we have come to known, her light dances and high sense of fashion at the time, told us it's fun to be a grownup. We likes her song, her personality and her music. Mona Abdel Ghani, was not something you would miss if you had a TV set. She has a lot of good songs, and her cassettes were top sellers.

Yet 14 years ago, she quit the music industry. But she returns this time for a good virtue album about family, friendship and all the public announcements one can make. But the music and the lyrics are not left to new comers. Mona is collaboration with the likes of Bahaa Aldeen (Lyrics) Mohamed and Waleed Saad for the music.

The album will also have national songs for Egypt. There will be 10 tracks and no release date so far. Mona became a pop star in the 80s by joining a band that has been known as Al Asdeqaa "The Friends , music by Ammar El Sariey. They released two band albums before going solo. I know I am curious to hear this album.

Listen: The No Dry Eye Arabic Song By Miami

Someone out there with too much time, made a video and used a song for that video, they have nothing in common, he got 9 million views. So, I had to check out this song...not bad. A song from a nobody that speaks about the void one has one someone that was there, no longer is.

The song belongs to the funky Kuwaiti Band Miami, none of the band's songs or music video have ever reached the 9 million--we did not check just guessing. So packaging and marketing do matter. This is a good song, but had this not been dubbed the "song that moves the feeling of millions" I would nevr have gave it a listen.

On another note, the band sort of manged to win the Google war and claim their band's name on the web. Type Miami Band, and they will turn up.

050 Band's Name Taken From Their Towns Area Code

There are few guys who are proud of their Al mansoura town. They wanted to tell their fans, that you no longer have to travel to Cairo and Alexandria to hear good music live. The dudes brought rock music into their town and from that town, they brought their music to the rest of Egypt.

Their formula is making oriental rock, telling Egyptian stories live to the masses. The released singles, and then those singles became an album--which has built up their fan base.

Al Mansoura means the victories, a 120 miles Northeast of Cairo on the other bank of the Nile delta. A city know for its architectural style and unique dialect. The band is extremely proud of their town and they want to have their stamp on the musical scene from their victorious town.

Arab Idol Season 2 Cairo Casting With Wama Ahmed Fahmy

Hundreds of folks turned out to the Arab Idol casting call in Cairo, only few of them will see the bosses. But to make sure the casting works out well, the organizers brought Ahmed Fahmy to take charge of the process. The singer actor Ahmed Fahmy will be filming the casting process, talking to the people with dreams who want to appear on the show.

Fahmy will also travel to Morocco to film. This is a chaotic scene with a lot of opinionated young people who want to get Fahmy's attention. I do not like how they treat the people on the set, this is not a perfect way to deal with young people who have nothing but dreams. And yes, these people can also be annoying.

@Lagix Samples The Classic Ahwak By Abdel Halim

I have received this tweet on my account about a new song by Lagix where they are boating about sampling a song from Abdel Halim Hafiz.

The song is Ahwak and those are two guys from Denmark who grew up listening to Arabic music. The band members are Mazen Ismail and Hadi Kakush who met when one of them moved into a small town in the countryside. Their first gift exchange was a Thriller, the album by the King of Pop. This gift would open Pandora's box

After years of refining their music skills, In 2011, Lagix released their first single "Jeg Føler Dig" Remix, which reached the Danish iTunes top 50 chart within 18 hours. In 2011, Lagix will be releasing their first international debut album recorded in English, self-titled 'LAGIX'. The album is produced in collaboration with Vivid, Nexus, Turkman Souljah, Saqib and Es. 'LAGIX' will be released in fourteen different countries later this year.

The railer below is showing some of the direction the album will take.

Great Stuff! Breaking The Boundaries "Ya Mn Hawah" (يا من هواه)

Take that sexual love out of the picture, and what you will be able to see will break the boundaries and show you a whole new world. If you are a musician who somehow is able to see beyond the bodily and individual love, you will find a universe of a different kind of love.

Not sure if many bands are able to pull this one, but the ones with a religious purpose find themselves staring such realities in the face and thus their music talks about the whole picture without getting philosophical.

Breaking The Boundaries is the name of that band to show me a new way. For friends who like music as a hobby, they were able to come up with a middle ground. Making rock music without the drama and the fashion show. The makeup of the band is in lead Guitar - Mohab Omar and vocals - new vocal so will be revealed Drums - Omar Raslan Rythem Guitar - Moayed Al qurashy Bass Guitar - Badr Madani

Breaking The Boundaries is a local band with a global audiance hungry to hear of them. they come from the Saudi city of Jeddah. They have only been around since late 2010 and their focus is to play alternative metal / blues / hard and soft rock music. Here's the kicker, the band is formed of medical students who like to do something different in their free times and share their music, lyrics. I saw, welcome and where have you been all my life?

WATCH: Gay Arabs Come Out Of The Closet Song / أدونيس - في زينا كتير

Lebanese Gays wanted to make a song about their plight in Arabia, meanwhile kids are dying in Syrian, Lebanon, Palestine and Libya. Not to forget Iraq. You are not alone the song goes, there are many like you. I have issue with this song for one reason. It outs a perfectly functional arrangement  Gays can do their stuff, anything they want in private and not talk about it.

This system has worked for generations, but thanks to pop culture who is making it now cool to declare your sexuality. They like to pretend that by declaring your gay sexuality  your life will be better. I beg to different as people have not "evolved" to that degree yet. They are more concerned about getting by and staying alive.   I do not think anything comes form flaunting your sexuality  This blog has always called on men who flaunt their macho style around and same for sleazy music video.

The celebrities appearing in the music video all live on the same block in that posh Beirut neighborhood  They all make money working on TV, none of them knows the price of sugar or the price of a loaf of bread. What makes you think those are perfect spokespersons for the gay issues in Lebanon or beyond? Isn't weird that gays now have to answer to more people than they had to in the past when they had more privacy?

This is one gay band that wants to shove the gay lifestyle on the conservative society. Of course this is been made public by a channel TV where the owner has just divorced his wife on TV in a commercials and has asked people to get a divorce either Arabic of Western style. But aside from that, how would Arabs now be able to get citizenship in European countries if you make being gay cool in the Middle East. Just think about it for a bit.

The music video plays like life is all parties when you declare your sexuality  everyone will love you dance with you and cheer you on with dancing and lights. You can as @JadShwery for his purpose of this music video--he has been rumored to be gay for some time now. I wish no harm upon gays or people who are homosexuals  I just know that sometimes good intentions bring undesired consequences.

Adonis started in 2010 when two students of architecture formed a band. Currently, the boys--as they refer to themselves are working on recording their second album, to be released in March 2012. 'Fi Zini Ktir', the first single from that disc, directed by Jad Shwery, was released in December 2012 see it below.

Update: This might be a gay Christmas song. But if you read the comments on the video YouTube, you will see that most people seem to take this song the same way I found it to be. the hit show Glee and similar shows are making it fashionable now to support gay causes. I think this is great, however, the local culture and the unique standing of members of that society should be taking into consideration.

What's Next For Indie Rock In Egypt

The Egyptian revolution brought down the censors and allowed young and talented musicians to come out of the shadow, they no longer needed government permission to perform in a venue. They no longer had to be pro regime to be on TV or get concert permits--within reason of course. So they have flourished singing about the man in the streets, their aspirations  their frustrations and a lot of funny stuff.

Indie bands of Egypt have managed to make some money too by releasing albums, doing concerts to the masses, and in some cases doing commercials and product endorsement. I since a fatigue in among bands--they had a great 2011 and a good 2012, but as pop stars come out and put out new music--the competition has become stiffer. Now there's some real market and indie bands ran the music scene in 2011, find themselves having to compete with seasoned and popular stars.

Album sales usually help make some money, but to be frank without copy rights protection, the money is limited. I believe reaching out to other markets outside of Egypt, would help get some cash, maybe a song in English or French that can stand on its own. Also movie soundtracks might be a good idea for quick cash. Some movies like fresh music that has been made for the movie.

I think, members of the band should also have their own concerts or music festivals. Alternative summer music festivals are not very well developed back home. College kids love to check out new bands and that's a great start. Pop can turn one's soul into a zombie, indie rock and such music can challenge listeners.
