Despite Clashes, Cairo International Film Festival Presses On

Violence no violence, the celebrities of the world ain't going to stop a party even if Cairo is on fire. The organizers wanted to party so they argued if we do not hold the Cairo Film Festival this year, we risk the event being taken out of the international film festivals agenda. They had to cancel it last year due to the brewing political and social climate.

So the 35th film festival saw the light despite the many hiccups it had--like the minister of culture forgetting his speech and a number of clashes few blocks away. More than fifty films were screened, certainly half of them did not have audience.  Few international filmmakers were present and you will see some of them speaking to the camera. North African cinema was alive and well in the film festival.

Joe Bou Eid won the best director category about his movie filmed in Beirut about his parents love story. and A French film won the best film.

The Arab Justin Timberlake Strikes Again--Wissam Hilal

"Last Goodbye" is the title of a new single from the super-talented pop sensation Wissam Hilal. The song is already getting a music video with director Robert Cremona and the track has been picked by a number of radios nationally and internationally on some of LA radios that BT entertainment taking care of and African and African-American radios.

The music video for his song was filmed in Beirut, his debut hit "Single" was filmed in Dubai where the artists is based yet he is on the move. What I like about Wissam how he sounds jut line one of the Jackson Five without coming across as he is imitating anyone. This explains the interest in his songs in places beyond the Arab World--try Kenya. It's a tough market, but his good work comes through and hits the mark.

Wissam Hilal is a naturally good looking guy who comes across as a charming person, and that is reflected into his songs allowing him to be a lot more personal and communicate different messages to his fans. To be frank, you listen to one of his songs when you are in a certain mood, then when your mood changes you still find something fresh about the second take.

The latest is Last Goodbye is a little darker than the breakout song, this is a plea from a man who lost something but tries to convince himself that by trying a little bit harder he can have this thing back. This mindset makes better songs, gets the most complicated of emotions to the listener's core. The new single is different a lot wiser than the previous track from Wissam.

The bad news is that the music industry needs a shot in the arm, but with little help Wissam was able to release great songs. I cannot wait to see what kind of hits he will be able to share with the world once the music industry figures itself out.

For the time being, non-Arabs in Dubai and the Arabs who like English songs are slowly embracing this very talented Arab Justin Timberlake! Wissam has the moves, the looks and the music savvy to entertain a global audience

As for the music video it should air internationally around May.

Video: Sudanese Jazz Live By Black Theama

Not sure if this qualify as African jazz or Egyptian jazz, but I am digging it. Black Theama, the band from southern Egypt has been working their acts for a long time. They have taken off because they are different, they are authentic and they know how to give the fans what they want.

Unlike many other bands, the trio makes local music with a mass appeal, they incorporate musical themes from around the globe, but never lose sight of what matters the most--home. Their songs are often simple with musical words and sounds, their music is often upbeat and their style is always smooth and easy flow.

While this concert was filmed in Cairo, where thousands of Sudanese live, the band performed it as if they were in downtown Khartoum.

Stream: Fatima Al Qadiri: The Oasis In Desert Strike

The Sengal native Fatima Al Qadiri is no stranger to war, she is one of a kind musician that always seems to be in a contact search for a better way to express war musically. Gunshots, and the whole nine yards. In a way she is so perfect to make music for our world in the virtual world of games where wars are popular. She is a video gamer herself.

Among the wars that have inspired Fatima to put into music is The First Gulf War "is a subject I've wanted to address for years," Al Qadiri writes over email. "I'm not a writer," she says, and couldn't write a memoir about her "experience as a child during the occupation of Kuwait and First Gulf War." But Desert Strike is a memoir nonetheless — "a sort of abstract audio memoir," she says. The music she creates is driven form her childhood memories yet geared toward those who like intercultural background music that stands form something.

The Desert Strike as her very own way of paying "homage to grime," but it's also a response: a masterful piece of work exploring the links between war and violence and representation and growing up. I know many speak about being citizens of the world, Fatima should be the president of that club. She lives and worked in New York City. Berlin, Dubai, Doha, London, Marrakesh, Kuwait City, Seoul, Milan, and other have seen her exhibitions and performances.

Fatima may rub some people the wrong way, she may even provoke some criticism for her work or the issues she chooses to highlight. I am unable to find much resources on her biography. something tells me that side of her life is off limits. All we have is her music which offers a lot of complexity on its own.

Laila Ghofran Form Music To A Restaurants!

Moroccans who make a home of Cairo are many, one particular one is singer Laila Ghogran, the blast from the past. While she cannot boast about her music career--trust me no one can at the moment. Laila can talk shop about her new business venture. She started an all Egyptian restaurant at her home in Morocco.

The right move is to hire real Egyptian chefs to create your menu. She seems to have been inspired to add the pharaoh's touch to her new eatery. This theme sells big with tourists and people who have been to Egypt  or have seen a Hollywood movie about it.

The idea is to allow the well to do people of Morocco to get a taste of the various Egyptian meals and treats.  This makes the first business adventure for the pop diva, and I hop it works out well. As at the opening she was posing with her staff and looking good.

All The Moroccan Songstresses: Baheejah Idrees

Another Moroccan pioneer in local music is a nice lady with the name Baheejah Idris "Bahijah Edrees" She is a songstress from the sixties era. She has done song sin Egyptian dialects too, so she made it a bit farther than her Moroccan peers at that time. She has retired from singing in the 80s and continues to be involved in a number of functions. Like her participation in a solidity with Palestine event

In a 2009 conference in the city of Rabat, Baheejah promised doing a song for Gaza in three languages at the event. When the attendees insisted on her she performed a bit of her song Achanah.
She has a dreamy voice that can sound like Najat Al Sagheera. She likes performing poems, like she did with Nizar Qabany's song "Get Angry" which was re-recorded by Asalah decades later.

Video: No One Bursts Akon's Bubble In Abu Dhabi

Americans hip hop, pop and R&B artist Akon wanted to give his fans in the Gulf's city Abu Dhabi's more than your average concert, and treat it was. Akon ha performed in other Arabic speaking countries before but no other Arab capital seen this before. The rapper bounced on top of his concert goers inside a gigantic clear bubble.

I gotta say, this must have been the most thrilling performance at that "Ya Salam" music festival in Abu Dhabi, the fans loved it and were on cloud nine as they get to come really close to the artist. His show took place on  November 1 and close to 100 thousand people were in attendance. I would have been worried about getting dizzy or worse throwing up, something Akon seems not to be worried about.

Akon was dancing, singing and living it up all for the enjoyment of those screaming fans who came from all over the world.

Akon entertained the attendant for an hour.  His act was followed by a performance by Tamer Hosny.

Akon in Abu Dhabi 01 NOVEMBER 2012

P.S. I did not know that Akon is originally from the West African nation Senegal, a place he calls "Hometown". Only to move to New Jersey at age seven.

Ever Wondred How Hamid El Shari Sound Like?

Watch this six years old music video for a little known duet for Libyan singer producer Hamid El Shari with a relative unknown singer named Dalinda. From the dialect I am guessing she is from a Northern Africa country. This is a mellow song, not about love in particular. The lyricist is from Libya. After online search, I have learned that Dalinda is also a Libyan singer who have half a dozen songs under her belt for Libya.

I must say I have not seen this sobering side of Hamid, his pop songs tend to hide the quality of his voice, in his song, I am pleased to see a mature Hamid. Online commentators are loving this song and every bit of it. I have enjoyed this little known song.

Mohammed Mounir All Funk Live Marika "ابن ماريكا"

Mounir had a great time at his most recent concert, but so did have the band and the audience. While the show is a delight, it brings the best and the most out of people as Mounir keeps it alive and kicking. The dude of funk and rock and all southern Egypt music is touring the country right now. This is one of the cooler songs that only Mounir can make. Others have tried to make this kind of songs, most failed. But Mounir always delivers a hot song.He is simply, the rock star persona of Egypt. He does pop too, but his approach to pop music is much more radical than most. He owns a genera and injects his attitude into his life performance. The way he behaves and moves on stage makes you want to dance and that's even without music. The lyrics he uses for this song end with the "ika".....and this is music. You might to be well versed in Egyptian Arabic and street slag to get this song.check it out. محمد منير ابن ماريكا حفلة العين السخنه

If someone out there wants to produce an album, why should we stop them. Yasir Habib has an album with a title from the most famous word uttered by the Libyan mad man Ghaddafi...Zanga Zanga.

Dahmane El Harrachi, The Godfather Of Algerian Music

Dahmane El Harrachi (دحمان الحراشي (الاسم الحقيقي هو عبد الرحمن عمراني) is a well regarded name in Algeria. He is the most original voice in that country, and responsible for more hits than any can afford to. The young voices of Algeria still draw from his archive and cover his oldies. He had many hits thought out his career, but the song that the world came to immortalize is his Ya Raee'h, the most covered Algerian song.

He was born in 1925 and took up singing as a career, he was the folk music guy in the Algerian capital. His songs focused on the lyrics that address real issues that faced his people back then. his father was the call to prayer in the mosque (Moa din) His song was about criticizing the drove of Algerian men leaving their country for Europe.

But then those same immigrants took his music to new land and established a great musical influence to be heard around the globe. Dhamane himself moved to France in 1949 and made a big name for himself playing music in the various Algerian cafes there.

He passed away in 1980 in car accident, but his music will remain her we pass it to the coming generations.

Amel Bouchoucha Remakes An Algerian Classic

Algeria is a big country with a lot of a long history of proud people and a longer tradition of originality. One of those who strive to find excellence and originality at home is singer actress Amel Bouchoucha.

While Algeria has one foot in France and the other foot in Arabia, the talents in that country seem to have made a big name for themselves in those two places. While Amel is cultured and knows the French ways, she chooses to be on the Arab side in her acting and in her singing.

Amel came to lead generations of Algerians who needed a local response to all that Egyptian and Lebanese pop. Good looks are a must too, thus enter the phase of Amel whose all Algerian beauty and pride are hard to miss.

Miami El Mambo El Sodani

Miami came to us from Kuwait and they have helped define what's cool back in the 90s, they injected funk and hip styles into their music. And this they manged to enter new lands and gained new fans.

The year is 2011 and the boys from the Miami band are back with a pretty much an album that rocks, one of the tracks that I liked is a song about Sudan dance, music and beauty. Something that's often overlooked by most mainstream Arab entertainers.

While, there album had a half dozen of good songs, they chose to film the one for/about Sudan. I must say, that was cool and the music video was even clever. There are bright colors, dance and energy that we have come to expect from these guys. They have even given the Sudanese national dress some air time as well as the dances from that place.

Enrico Macias, Israeli Arab Jew Algerian Musician

It's now official, the people of Algeria love the music of this native song, Enrico Macias, they welcome his music, but refuse the man himself. That's the real life story of singer Gaston Ghrenassia, also known as Enrico Macias. Born to a Jewish family in Constantine, Algeria, and has played the guitar from childhood. Thanks to his father who was a violinist in an orchestra that played primarily maalouf, Yalonda-Arabic music. Gaston started playing the Orchestra at 15.

In Montreal Canada he was honored, and in his speech he renewed his desire to visit Algeria where he wants to throw a concert for the Jews of the world. But as far as we know no one in Algeria has picked the hint and this it seems that Enrico is unwelcome.

We have to go back to 1999 when he was invited to visit by the president of Algeria himself. Due to calls of boycott and controversy, Enrico has not made the trip. He has not given up hope, expressing his desire to visit Algeria in just about every occasion.

One thing remains true, the people of Algeria from all ages appreciate Macias music and they buy his CDs. One thing Macias did say that did not help his case is criticizing the government of Algeria for wasting the gas resources of their country. While it might be true what he said, it will not earn him any friends in high places.

A number of Algerian intellect maintain they they welcome the singer to come visit in one condition, "he must distant himself from the Zionist movement", if he does that, he would be welcome home.

If you get worked up about this, think about this millions of Palestinians wish they could go back and visit their native land, as of right now Israel has refused to even agree that those people do exist.

Arab Celebrites Stand Up For The Little Ones

Few Arab celebrities agree on things, bu when it comes to children, they are never late to pitch in. They all give their voices for anything to do with kids, especially if there's a camera rolling.

Here's a star packed video from those Arab entertainers from pop singers to actors to celebrities giving their voice to the ones that seem to have none. They are reading the rights of children. The message is brought by UNICEF Middle East and North Africa.

Kathem, Saber El Robaee, Nancy Ajram, Khalid Abu El Naga, Mahmud Qabeel. Algerian singer Dahameel La Rossy and Iranian actor Mahitab Karamaty and Syrian actress Chris Bashar. Again this is some random thing, I agree with everything they say, but I am lost when the speak about a child having the right to choose his own religion, seriously? Do you live on a different planet here?

Shamandora, Mohamed Mouner King Of Live Music

Mohamed Mouner does concerts different. his understanding of live performances is close of the Western one, it's not just a guy or a girl with a mike and some nobody in the back making noise. It's a complete show. This might be partially due to his African affinity.

Dance and music made by local instruments make up the show, a different flavor that people flock to attend. Unlike many singers whose idea of concert is some cute outfit--a a pair of jeans and open shirts. He does live music on the spot. That maneas no lip synching.

That's why Mouner is a big ticket in places outside Arabia, he gets it. He works hard to connect with the people at the venue. He is loose that way...and thus his music comes unforced. This concert was filmed in 2003, in Europe.

Adelina Ismaili Brings Back Faudel

He is Algerian singer of Rai and she is from Kosovo. If you think about it, their paths will never cross paths.

Adelina Ismaili is back again on the music scene of Kosovo. Despite her occasional slip-ups and let downs, especially in the postwar years in her home, Adelina Ismaili filmed her new video at Paris in collaboration with an algerian singer – Faudel, born and raised in France.

Although in several languages, I love you more is quite well perceived by music critics in France and it is already a total hit in Kosovo. What’s more, Adelina signed a contract with the american music group Universal Music and expectations for her future career are very positive. I wish Adelina well, and hope Faudel will release some new album that will have some Arabic in it.

I like this song, but I have no idea why it comes now, no back story takes away form this song. There might be some reason behind this collaboration, but I am happy to see singers come from different yet similar cultures

Algerian Diva Warda Revisits Her Past

How to make a legendary diva star in a music, preserve her legacy and reintroduce her. This was the challenge Egyptian director Sandra had to deal with in her work to direct Warda, the Algerian diva.

The song from the latest music video for Warda, released two months ago. To her credit Warda still looks stunning and her voice can still outshine a pack of those hall singers. This music video is about Warda and her past. She is not falling in love with some 20 something guy.

Instead she is revisiting her old flame, her ex who has left her for a younger woman. Warda is still holding the castle with her beautiful children and grandchildren. She is still looking gorgeous and the old man seems to be regretting the moment he has left her.

This is an old school song for the mature among us who strive for originality and the good old days or at least the thought of them. Warda and Rotana did well by choosing this song to film. The song presents Warda in a new light--she has recently confessed she has no luck with me or she married the wrong guys. This is a plus
